Concept Trice Monster

 

Aim
To see just how light we could build a road going practical and fast Trice. Finished to a high standard. Our standard trikes have an excellent reputation for strength and reliability but we wanted to know if they could be made lighter and still be durable.

Parameters
Must have the usual Trice features such as adjustability.
Must have a good range of gears to cope with hilly country like Cornwall.
Must have good brakes.
Aimed at high speed touring and Audax type riding.
Not cost constrained but within sensible limits.
Must be technically possible to build now and be specified with available components.

The new machine is based on the Trice Monster design but has many weight saving features. It has been produced as a "Dream Trike" with no expense spared on frame weight reducing details and it has the lightest components available. The trike incorporates some of the ideas that have come from ICE employee Ben Dickinson's race success on a modified XXL in the BHPC series this season. It is also fully specified with a view to serious Audax use following the good performance of at least 5 Trice in this years Paris-Brest-Paris 1200Km ride.
The main frame is built from our normal T45 (steel) to a gauge specification for real world use for a rider of about 6' and 12st - Chris is going to test this one to see just how light we can go.
All of the usual Trice features are on the machine such as adjustable seat angle, boom adjustment and handlebar adjustment, disc brakes, 23"-118" wide range gears and so on.


 
 
 
Frame
Main tubes are T45, remainder smaller tubes are Cro Mo. All brazed, silver soldered and decorative lugged construction.
Bottom Bracket - Cro Mo, machined and lightened.
Mech Post - Cro Mo, butted.
Boom - T45, butted.
 
Main Cruciform
Main spar - T45, current "light weight" specification.
Cross Axle - T45, triple butted.
Head tubes - machined and lightened.
Main joint - lightened decorative lug, silver soldered.
Frame clamp bosses - lightened
 
Steering and pulley boss - ribs thinned.
Steering boss - machined down.
Pulley boss - machined down.
Cable stops and guides - thinned down.
Frame sleeves - machined and lightened.
Bottle bosses - lightened.
 
New Seat mount design - triple butted mounting tube and thinned silver soldered decorative lug.
 
Rear Triangle
Main tube - T45, current "light weight" specification.
Seat post tube - double butted.
Seat post clamp - lightened.
Chain stays - Columbus, lightened.
Seat stays - Columbus Foco.
Cross braces - Columbus, lightened.
 
Mudguard bosses - lightened.
Rack mount bosses - lightened.
Mudguard eyes - lightened.
Rear drop outs - drilled and lightened.
 
Steering
King Posts - Lightened and with lightened disc brake mounts.

 
Headsets - lightened and modified Stronglight A9.
 
Stem T - butted.
Pivot - machined 7075T6.
Pivot bearings - lightweight ball bearing.
Top Lock screw - Ti.
Handle bar clamps - Lightened and Ti bolts fitted.
Shims - lightened.
Bars - shortened, butted and modified to take ICE lightened bar end shifters, drilled for internal cable routing.
 
Seat
Super light Carbon fibre with foam core. Narrow racing profile, ventilation holes.
 
Cover - lightweight and breathable, made from our standard material.
Ti mounting bolts.
 
 
Wheels
Front:-
Hubs - Modified ICE standard hubs, lightened and drilled.
Axles - 7075T6 machined oversize and lighter oversize bearings with Ti locking bolts.
Spokes - 16 x Ti.
Rims - Lightest 349 rim available, drilled to lighten further.
Tyres - Primo Champ with Cheng Shin light tubes.
 
 
Rear:-
Hub - Lightest 135mm 32 hole hub on the market, custom built with extra strong clutch.
QR - Ti.
Rim - Lightest 26" 559 rim on the market.
Tyre- Tufo Elite Jet Tubular Clincher 26"
Spokes - 32 x Ti.
 
 
Components
Chainset - Carbon triple.
Chain Rings - Outer - Carbon 53T, middle Dura Ace 39, inner Dura Ace 30.
Bottom bracket - Ti.
Pedals - Ti lightest available with lightening kit.
Front Mech - Dura Ace.
 
 

Chain - Hollow Pin.
Rear Derailleur - XTR.
Cables - Nokon.
Cassette - One piece hard anodised ceramic coated aluminium, 11-32.

Price
This is a concept prototype and hence has not been produced to a planned retail price. It would obviously be very expensive considering the time consuming labour content in the frame special modifications and the very expensive state of the art (and in some cases even modified to lighten further by ICE) components. In general the lighter a trike is made, the more expensive it becomes, this is a VERY light trike!

Availability
This trike as it stands could be sold but it has not yet been thoroughly tested. Some of the ideas may prove to be just too light (some could be lighter still!). Many of the elements will find their way into production Trice. Some will become lightweight options to be ordered individually and applied to any model.
